Can Big Walk run with 8 GB RAM?
8 GB is below Big Walk's Steam RAM minimum. Compare Windows and Mac requirements, separate RAM from graphics memory, and weigh player reports.
The short answer
8 GB is below the published Steam memory minimum: 12 GB for Windows and 16 GB for Mac. That comparison does not prove the game will fail to launch. Some players report running it with 8 GB; others report problems. We have not benchmarked these machines, so we cannot promise that yours will work.
The figures below were checked on 26 October 2026 against the official Steam listing. This is a guide to reading the requirements, not a compatibility test.
Start with the store you will use
- Version: Steam, Windows. Published memory requirement: Minimum 12 GB; recommended 16 GB RAM. What 8 GB establishes: Below the listed RAM minimum; launch and performance are not determined.
- Version: Steam, Mac. Published memory requirement: Minimum and recommended 16 GB memory. What 8 GB establishes: Below the listed memory minimum; launch and performance are not determined.
- Version: Mac App Store. Published memory requirement: No RAM figure in the inspected Compatibility field. What 8 GB establishes: The field cannot establish whether 8 GB is sufficient.
Steam's Mac minimum also names macOS 15 and Apple silicon M1 or newer. The official Mac App Store listing instead lists macOS 12.0 or later in Compatibility. The developer links to that listing from its official FAQ. Do not silently apply one storefront's requirements to the other. A missing RAM or chip field is not a promise of 8 GB performance or Intel Mac support.
For Windows, RAM is only one requirement. Check the exact OS, processor and graphics model on Steam as well. Its minimum and recommended tables do not specify a resolution, graphics preset or FPS target.
Does an 8 GB graphics card count as 8 GB of RAM?
No: an 8 GB discrete graphics card does not add 8 GB to the installed system RAM figure. Microsoft distinguishes graphics-card VRAM from system memory. Shared GPU memory uses system RAM; it is not an extra allowance to count again. Integrated graphics can also reserve system memory, so a “dedicated” label by itself does not always mean separate physical VRAM.
These are hypothetical readouts, not machines we tested:
- Windows: 8 GB installed RAM and an 8 GB discrete graphics card. The RAM comparison remains 8 GB against Steam's 12 GB minimum. Do not add the two numbers. The exact graphics model still needs its own comparison.
- Windows: 12 GB installed RAM and an unlisted graphics model. The memory amount reaches the published minimum. That does not establish that the whole computer meets the requirements; the graphics comparison remains unresolved here.
- Steam Mac: M1, macOS 15 and 8 GB memory. The named chip family and OS match those listed minimum fields, but memory remains below 16 GB. Matching two fields does not cancel the third.
If Windows also shows a lower usable-memory figure, record both numbers. Microsoft explains that firmware and drivers can reserve installed memory. Steam's RAM line does not distinguish installed from usable memory, so matching the installed amount is not a promise that the full amount is available to the game.
Why players report different outcomes
An individual report can describe what happened on that person's computer. It cannot establish a success rate or tell us which component caused a problem.
- Player report (linked source): The author of “Can I run this game if I only have 8GB of RAM?” later says it worked with reduced graphics. What it adds: A reported below-minimum success. What it cannot establish: Full hardware, controlled settings and a repeatable performance result.
- Player report (linked source): In “Any luck with low-memory macbooks?”, a commenter reports completing the game on an 8 GB M1 MacBook Air at low settings but encountering an application-memory warning during the initial load. What it adds: A reported success that also involved startup difficulty. What it cannot establish: A reliable workaround or a prediction for another Mac.
- Player report (linked source): In the Macbook Neo discussion, a commenter reports that the Steam version of Big Walk would not launch on their brother's 8 GB M1 MacBook. What it adds: A contrasting launch-failure report, relayed by a family member. What it cannot establish: The OS version is not stated; this does not prove RAM alone caused the failure.
These reports were read on 26 October 2026. Their exact publication dates were not established. We have not independently reproduced them, and we do not turn their settings or FPS anecdotes into recommendations or benchmarks.
Find the numbers on your computer
- Windows: open Settings → System → About and record the installed RAM, processor, Windows version and system type. Microsoft's device-information guide explains these fields.
- Record the exact graphics adapter under Device Manager → Display adapters. Microsoft's display-adapter instructions show where it appears. Task Manager → Performance → GPU separates dedicated and shared GPU memory on supported drivers; Microsoft's GPU article specifies WDDM 2.0 or newer for that view.
- Mac: record chip, memory and macOS version. On macOS 13 or later, open Apple menu → System Settings → General → About, as shown in Apple's About-settings guide. On macOS 12, start with Apple menu → About This Mac. Apple explains how to identify the installed macOS version. Compare with your intended storefront.
If a processor or graphics model is not listed, this page leaves its equivalence unresolved. Model numbering or memory capacity alone is not a performance comparison.
If you already own it and it runs poorly
The developer's FAQ recommends lowering Render Scale and Quality, then increasing Render Scale gradually. This is advice for poor frame rate; it does not guarantee that an 8 GB machine can launch or that settings can overcome a missing requirement.
Our practical conclusion: an untested 8 GB computer is an unresolved part of your planned session. Record the exact device and storefront, distinguish a successful launch from acceptable play, and avoid treating somebody else's successful setup as your result. Once hardware is settled, the multiplayer manual covers joining your group.
