Big Walk Guide

Gear, backpack and the slot economy

This page is not an item catalogue. The developers never published item descriptions and we have no inside information, so rather than list scattered names, we switched to a different frame - one that only emerged after reading thirty player reports: gear in Big Walk is a slot economy. You have one hand, one backpack, one hip mount, and different things occupy different slots.

Once you see it that way, a pile of unrelated annoyances collapses into one question: what is each person carrying right now, and therefore what can this group do and not do.

Four constraints

Why cannot I pick it up, why cannot I climb, why can nobody hear me - inside this model those three questions have the same answer.

Your hands hold exactly one thing

While you are carrying something, climbing, pulling people up and pressing switches are mostly off the table. So who holds what directly changes what the group can do.

The backpack moves things off your hands

The value of a backpack is not an extra slot, it is two free hands. Everywhere that asks you to haul and climb at once, the backpack is the difference between possible and not.

Hip pack is not a second backpack

Hip capacity is limited, and items like the megaphone are explicitly hand-or-backpack only. Do not treat the pack as a solve-everything slot.

One item per hand, ever

A hard constraint the developers designed in. Paired items such as walkie-talkies should be split between two people, not doubled up on one.

Five positions

In hand6 items

One slot only. While your hands are full you usually cannot climb, pull anyone up, or press switches.

Backpack2 items

Wearing it moves items off your hands, but you have to find the backpack itself in the structures first.

Hip pack2 items

Limited capacity, and not everything fits - the megaphone explicitly does not.

Carried0 items

Cannot be stored in any slot. You simply have to walk it there.

Not an item1 items

A fixture or a place inside the game, not something you can pick up.

Walkie-talkie

Walkie-talkie
What it does
Keeps voice and text chat alive once short-range voice fades out - official in-game text chat stops working with distance, and the walkie-talkie pushes that limit back.
Where it is
Pickups scattered across the island.
Why it matters
The key trade-off: you can only hold one at a time. So the correct move is to split a pair between two people, one each, rather than giving both to one person. Almost every guide on the island repeats this.

Megaphone

MegaphoneSingle source
What it does
Carries a shout far beyond normal voice range, which is how you regroup after the team spreads out. Hand-held, or strapped to a backpack.
Where it is
Three fixed megaphone mounts, all on top of the tall yellow cube structures. The height means a teammate has to boost you up first, and then you pull them up after you. They sit on the north cliff edge of the yellow tower, in the woods east of the green tower, and on the south coast near the purple puzzle area.
Why it matters
Will not fit in the hip pack or on the belt - the most counter-intuitive rule in the whole slot economy. You assume a hip pack means carrying more, but the megaphone only ever occupies a hand or the backpack.

We have only seen this in one player report, with nowhere second to cross-check it. It is most likely correct, but read it as one player's experience rather than a game rule.

Portable radio / field radio

Portable radio / field radioSingle source
What it does
The radio plays; the seven transmitters scattered across the island add channels to it. Walk up, press the button once, and the channel is unlocked permanently.
Where it is
The first one is near Crosswalk, and the radio itself sits right beside it. The other six are spread through the music landmarks of each tower, one of them inside the yellow tower tunnel, which means the yellow tower has to be cleared before you can reach it.
Why it matters
The radio occupies your hand slot, so if you want to listen while you walk and solve, you need the backpack first. And one more thing: the Crosswalk unit only plays, it is not a transmitter - standing next to it waiting for channel 4 is waiting for nothing.

We have only seen this in one player report, with nowhere second to cross-check it. It is most likely correct, but read it as one player's experience rather than a game rule.

Telescope / binoculars

Telescope / binocularsDrawbridge
What it does
Watch and activate certain targets from a distance.
Where it is
Scattered across the island. The opening beach crate-in-a-cave puzzle needs someone stationed at the telescope the whole time.
Why it matters
The person on the telescope has to stay put - the moment they leave, the activation drops. It is the first design in the game that pins somebody to one spot on purpose.

Flare gun

Flare gun
What it does
Fires a flare, used as a long-range visual marker and signal.
Where it is
Pickups scattered across the island.
Why it matters
Official patch 1.4.10 describes it as "the item that shoots flares" - one of several places where the developers themselves redact an item name in the patch notes.

Flashlight

Flashlight
What it does
Light. Necessary in tunnels, caves and at night.
Where it is
Pickups scattered across the island.
Why it matters
Nights fall very quickly on the island and the tunnel system is completely dark. The official FAQ also mentions accessibility items that highlight interactive objects.

Backpack2 items

Backpack

Backpack
What it does
Once you wear it, whatever was occupying your hands can go inside, and both hands come free.
Where it is
Blue spiral and ring structures on the island - they look like a multi-storey car park. One sits in each tower area, mostly in the early zones. A teammate has to walk up to you and put it on you before it works.
Why it matters
It is not decoration, it is the line between "can you climb while carrying something" and cannot. The field radio occupies your hands - without a backpack you have to carry it everywhere, and you cannot climb carrying anything. So the earlier the better.

the item that lets you carry +1

the item that lets you carry +1
What it does
Lets you carry one extra collectable at a time, and it clips onto the backpack.
Where it is
At the base of the weather balloon - north side of the green and blue towers. One location on the whole island.
Why it matters
Hauling collectables is the dullest chore in this game, and this item halves it outright. It sits in the north, off the route every guide walks, which is why a large share of players never learn it exists.

Hip pack2 items

Belt / hip pack

Belt / hip pack
What it does
A small-capacity mount worn at the waist.
Where it is
The same blue spiral structures, mostly in the later zones.
Why it matters
This is the one behind the Big Help achievement (Wear something on your hip). Note that capacity is not universal: the megaphone explicitly will not go in the hip pack, so the pack is not a general-purpose bag.

Folding map / compass

Folding map / compassRed Tower
What it does
Makes the four-digit coordinate pairs on screen readable.
Where it is
The end of the red tower reward chain - solve the five puzzles around the red tower, cut the key, open the map room.
Why it matters
This is the actual prerequisite for the coordinate puzzles. Without it, numbers like 4166/1899 are gibberish, and the root cause of most "I cannot read the coordinate puzzle" questions is simply that the red tower is not finished yet.

Not an item1 items

Salon

SalonYellow Tower
What it does
Paints your character. Pick a shiny colour and have a teammate apply it to you.
Where it is
Inside the tunnel system (yellow tower cleared first), near the red-to-blue connection by Rave. Cross a green bridge and go down the red stairs - the staircase that reminds everyone of an Escher print - and the purple area beyond it is the salon.
Why it matters
This is the one behind the Big Makeover achievement (Get shiny), and the community treats it as the mark of a real 100%. Note that it is a place you walk to, not something you get automatically for collecting everything.

The most valuable item is the one that lets you carry one more

Hauling collectables is the dullest labour in this game - trip after trip. There is one item that lets you carry one extra at a time, which halves that work outright. It sits at the base of the weather balloon, on the north side of the green and blue towers, and north is not on any main route. The result is that most groups never learn it exists and finish the game using the most expensive method available.

The backpack is the same story: many people assume it means an extra slot, so they go and collect other things first. What a backpack actually does is free both hands, and you need free hands to climb and to pull people up. Get that order wrong and a group will grind for a long time at several places that demand hauling and climbing at once - where the fix is simply going back and taking the backpack first.

How this page was built

  • The slot economy framing is ours. The developers never published an item-system spec, and no single guide summarises it as a model. It is what we got by induction from friction points that repeat across thirty player reports.
  • Specific locations and counts are marked single-source.There are 11 items listed, of which 2 are supported by only one report, and each is flagged on its entry.
  • We would rather leave a gap.For some items we know they exist but have no reliable source for where, so they are not on this page - we did not fill the table with "probably somewhere in the area".

After you have the item, how do you get up there: general techniques ->How to use walkie-talkies and the megaphone: communication protocols ->All sources and grading ->
